Anyone can still verify it in the DNS records – that’s the official beginning of our story.

At the time, we didn’t have a finished product – only an idea. We were in Mountain View, California, working on custom software projects for clients. One evening, sitting in the hotel room after a long day, we started talking about building something of our own – a chat application for teams and companies.

Back then, there weren’t many options for business communication. The tools that existed were either too basic or too complex. We wanted to give teams the same comfort and simplicity people already had when chatting with friends and family in consumer apps – but built specifically for work.

How the name “Brosix” was born

Our company at the time was called D-Bross, and my son was a big fan of the Asterix and Obelix movies.
Combining the two names (D-Bross and Asterix) – gave us something that just felt right: Brosix.

The domain brosix.com was available, and we registered it that same night. We didn’t yet have a logo or a product roadmap – just the belief that teams needed a better way to stay connected.

The first version

Six months later, in June 2006, we launched the very first version of Brosix. It had only text chat and file transfer, but that was enough to make teams more connected and productive.

Over time, we added new features based on customer needs and real-world use:

Audio and video calls

Screenshot capture and screen sharing

Whiteboard collaboration

SIP calling (for phone integration — something we later removed, since most users didn’t need it)

Each new feature came from listening to our users, not from chasing trends. Brosix evolved step by step, always guided by the same goal – to make communication effortless.

What we didn’t plan – but built naturally

Many people today associate Brosix with security and privacy, but interestingly, that wasn’t our original focus. We simply wanted to create an easy, comfortable chat app for work.

Yet by giving each company its own private communication space, encryption, and full control over who could join, security became a natural byproduct of how Brosix was designed. It wasn’t the goal – it was the result of doing things right.

Two decades later

Twenty years later, Brosix looks very different from those early days. We’ve added message replies, mentions, SEEN receipts, message labels, and editing.

We’ve improved audio and video quality, published applications for all major platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone/iPad, Android and Web, and expanded administrative options in the Web Control Panel.

What hasn’t changed is our mission – to make team communication simple, private, and distraction-free.

A milestone we share with you

Brosix wouldn’t exist without the thousands of teams who’ve trusted us over the years. To every customer – past and present – thank you for being part of this journey.

As part of our 20-year celebration, we’ve prepared something special for both new and long-time Brosix users.
Stay tuned – we’ll be sharing the details soon.

Related reading

Where the name Brosix comes from

Brosix Features Overview

Start your free 14-day trial

Written by Stefan Chekanov, Co-founder of Brosix.

On December 7, 2005, we registered the domain brosix.com.
